It is supposed to work with more recent kernels.
The eeebuntu and fedora info says it works -- now.

And this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-backports-modules-2.6.32/+bug/521967
suggests it works for more recent ubuntu or one of the PPA kernels mentioned there.

Maybe you just need an update?
