G'Day Alan,
What's in your /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf?
Try to start your WIFI manually by
sudo wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -D <driver>
-c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -dd
and watch the output for errors.
Cheers,
Sven
