I've done dist-upgrades on every version of Ubuntu that has come out,
including Edgy.
What I usually end up having to do is:
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
apt-get dist-upgrade
Regardless of whether I used 3rd party repos of not, ubuntu-desktop
always seems to get removed during the dist-upgrade. And lots of
critical things are depended on by ubuntu-desktop I've found (or a
dependant on a dependacy or whatever).
The other day I dist-upgraded from breezy straight to edgy, with the
only real hitch being that the volume-id package wouldn't install (it
clashed with some package that I can't remember).
Ended up having to do a dpkg -i --force-all volume-id-<bla>.deb and then
away it went.
I think if most people did an "apt-get install ubuntu-desktop ; apt-get
dist-upgrade" after the initial dist-upgrade, there'd be a lot less
broken ubuntu installs around.
