Dunno much about Edgy, but there's a kernel bug wrt setting the GPIO
pins on some Radeon cards that can give this problem -- it was in
2.6.8 to today's 2.6.19 snapshot.
The cure on the older kernels is to add:
MonitorLayout "LVDS,Auto"
to xorg.conf in the "Device" section (this assumes you're using the
`ati' driver.)
