Hi all,

September 16th is Software Freedom Day, and there is a great day happening
at UNSW for families, individuals and students. There will be talks,
workshops, giveaways and more. Come along to hear from culturalists,
journalists, technologists and even a senator about why software freedom
affects you and your life.

Have you ever thought about how dependent your life is on technology? It
underlies how you communicate with people, how you enjoy movies and music,
how you get educated and increasingly how our society works. Voting systems,
personal data, culture, knowledge and more are being digitised and yet we
are as a society quite unaware of why trusted and transparent technologies
are vital to maintaining the freedoms we take for granted. If we can't see
into a system, if we can't be absolutely sure that it does what it should
then how can we trust the outcomes?

How can we trust a Government voted in by software that is kept secret? How
can we be sure our email isn't being tracked? How can we be free to use a
music CD how we want if it is locked up with technology protections? We are
already having issues accessing data created only 10 years ago, how will you
be able to read those old emails, essays and poems when you are 70?

Software Freedom Day explores these and other concerns about transparency in
technology and software freedom. After all, we are only as free as the
technology we rely upon.

Help spread the word around Sydney and send this around to your friends and
families.

Cheers and hope to see you all there!
