[SLUG] Problems building Dapper kernels

Hi all,

I'm trying to get Dapper onto an embedded board I'm working on.
First problem was that the Dapper kernel on the install media
hangs as soon as it touches the PCMCIA stuff on this board.
I tried a bunch of different techniques to boot with pcmcia
disabled, but none of them worked.

I therefore pulled the hard drive and put it in another machine
and built a kernel with all PCMCIA stuff removed. One problem
I ran into here was that make-kpkg on Dapper doesn't seem to
build the initramfs that this 2.6 kernel needs to boot. After
spending a bunch of time googling I managed to build an initramfs
that would boot on build machine without the pcmcia problems.

Putting the disk back on the problematic machine and it still
won't boot. It gets a significant part of the way an then stops
with:

   Begin: Waiting for root filesystem

Some research on this

   http://www.linux.lk/lurker/message/20060525.164541.6160e058.en.html

seems to suggest that this is a udev problem. But that doesn't make
sense because it booted on the other machine.

Thank fsck its Friday because I've been banging my head against this
for way too long (I haven't even mentioned some of the other problems
I've had).

And Jdub, please, when is reportbug going to be fixed. Reportbug is
small, simple, elegant and it works. Launchpad is huge, complicated
unfathomable and a PITA. I really cannot be the only person who
prefers reportbug. Oh, look:

    https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/7839

so we have to wait for a new tool to be written.
