Thanks for the replies. The HMC (http://www.hmc.com.au/hmc/welcome.php)
looks interesting, but as David Kempe said, it's a bit more than what I
want (and you pay for it, which is entirely fair). I've emailed them
to see if they've considered a music only appliance. I'll let you know
what they say.
I'd also considered the laptop idea, but the usability as an audio
component isn't quite there. (For the same reason, a Mac mini isn't
quite there - no LCD, no remote.
Gavin, the squeezebox at http://www.slimdevices.com/ looks very nice,
almost perfect. For me, it may be enough, since I have a PC that's
permanently on which can store and serve the songs. For my dad, whose
PC is off more than on, it wouldn't do. But it's very tempting; plus
buying one would help fund further development ... Like supporting an
external USB drive.
