[SLUG] How to create an Ubuntu live cd?

HI all,

I have downloaded a Gnoppix/ubuntu live CD but it didn't work
on the machine I wanted to run it on (kernel panic). 

I now want to try compiling a custom kernel and building a
live CD around that. Compiling a custom kernel is no mystery
to me, nor is making an ISO image. I just don't know how to
collect all the rest of thse stuff needed.

Has anyone done this? Is there a script to do this?
