It turns out that two-fms makes no difference at all, it's actually
turning off read-ahead that makes the difference. "mt stoptions"
turns off everything except the options listed on the command line, so
by turning on two-fms this way I was turning off read-ahead as a
I discovered this when, instead of using "mt stoptions", I changed to
"mt stsetoptions" to turn on two-fms without changing any other the
other defaults, and reading failed again. With "mt stclearoptions
read-ahead", both read and write work perfectly.
