dunno - http://fy.chalmers.se/~appro/linux/DVD+RW/hcn.html seems to have 
some info. (probably yes just fine)
rpc1.org seems to suggest that the sony dru-700a I bought is a rebadged 
liteon. the region free liteon patchy thing seemed to work fine.

yeah its a single-layer dvd burner as well as cdrw etc

the disks are pretty similar to the ones you rent at the video store.
