When I am at home I connect my laptop to a Benq FP731 LCD (17" Flat
Screen) monitor.  When I press Fn + F8 to view my laptop via my Benq
monitor I get no response from the monitor.

There is no real easy way for a novice user. Turn your lappy off, plugin the vga, then turn on the lappy. Lappy should be blank, with outputon screen.
