I would be trusting a full system backup over some untried "recovery"
utility.
If you didn't have NTFS filesystems, an extra hard-disk and parted
http://www.gnu.org/software/parted/ would be a great method for both
resizing partitions and making a backup image.
For NTFS though the most promising effort seems to be Partition Image
http://www.partimage.org/ , even though they say the NTFS support is
still experimental at least it will tell you if it failed to copy the
image correctly.
If all else fails, there is always Norton/Symatecs Ghost ([Slugchat]IMHO
the only product they have ever produced that is actual worth
buying[/Slugchat]).
