How did the daemon not work? David already pointed out the correct recipe
for non-daemon usage, but if you want to reduce load by using spamc and the
daemon, it ends up being pretty much the same:

  | /usr/bin/spamc
  
  :0:
  * ^X-Spam-Status: Yes
  Trash.SPAM
