OK thanks for that. Once I have Linux up-n-running on
my system, then, I imagine that application source
code is application source code, and it is the way it
is compiled that defines the system it runs on? (ie
compiling it on a PPC Linux will produce a different
executable code than on a PC but will have identical
functionality?)

I've heard Debian is a bit difficult to install, and
as this is my first crack at running Linux on a Mac I
think I'd be better off with a relatively
straightforward installation initially. Also, the
main reason I want to run Linux (not only for the
networking side of it) is the front-end development
Linux offers-C, JDK, HTML etc.

As far as I'm aware it's a standard run-o-the-mill
iMac (except maybe the hard drive is different). The
only peripheral I have running out of it is a (rather
dated) LaCie USB CD burner. And if the burner doesn't
work under Linux, I can always fall back and reboot
into OS X.

Countdown to Linx on iMac Project: T-72hrs :)
