[SLUG] Is there an SQL statement in PostgreSQL...

...similar to the DESCRIBE <table_name> statement in MySQL that will 
provide a list of fields in a table?

I know it is possible using the \d <table_name> call from psql but I need
a similar function that can be submitted as an SQL call.
