[SLUG] ALSA + Sound Blaster Live + Guitar -> Skipping

Morning all,

Reading Jeff's recent post regarding ALSA + Sound Blaster Live, I
decided to give ALSA another go. Much easier to get working than
the last time I tried it, and the sound quality is certainly much
improved over the OSS emu10k1 module.

Problem is that whenever I try to record anything, the sound skips.
I've got my guitar amp plugged into the sound-in of my SB Live card.
Using the ALSA modules, I've tried recording using a number of
different programs - Broadcast2000, snd, etc (Haven't got ardour to
compile yet, to configure seems to need autopoint which doesn't seem
to be part of the Debian stable version of gettext). Using Jack for
the programs that support it. Running a 2.4.20 kernel with Andrew
Morton's low latency patch applied. I play a bit of guitar into
the system, and listen back. Roughly every 5 seconds the recording
skips. Doesn't seem to be a problem with playback - playing wav files
recorded using the OSS emu10k1 module works fine under ALSA. Also,
if I rmmod the ALSA snd-emu10k1 module, then modprobe the OSS emu10k1
module, recording doesn't skip in this way.

System is a PIII-450, 128MB RAM, Debian stable (just did a dist-upgrade).
Any thoughts on how to stop the skipping?

Thanks, Tom.
