I'm sorry but this isn't the case.  Only DSL modems that are routers 
aswell do this internally.  If you just have a standard ethernet modem 
then you will have to run some sort of pppoe over it (whether it is an 
actual pc or a separate hardware router, doesn't matter) to connect to 
telstra's DSL network. 

Also another option is to run pppoA instead but thats fairly similar in 
the setup.
