What kind of interface are you using for the tape drive? SCSI-2? Ultra
SCSI? UW160? That's a question that can't be answered without more
information.
However, 2.5 gig in two hours is about 1.25 gig per hour - or
approximately 21 megabytes per minute. That translates to an average
connect speed of about 170 megaBITS per minute, or 2.8 megabits per second
- which looks pretty slow to me. But without knowing more about your
hardware configuration, system load and what not, I won't make further
comment.

The backup speed is more likely related to the tape than the software.
