To fill you in a bit more.....
It stands for a "disk image" and as Jeff says it is specific to Mac OSX.
In Mac OSX you click the little dmg icon and the OS will mount that
image as a directory.
It then appears as a folder on your desktop with the files in it that
you want.
But its only for Mac OSX.
