hmm. ok. NFS is picky about spaces and such in /etc/exports. I'm using
this, for example:

/stuff 192.168.9.10(ro)

notice that there's no space before the bracket.

And aside from that it sounds like you aren't running portmap or nfsd,
one of the two. Try this on your server as root:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs stop
/etc/rc.d/init.d/portmap restart
/etc/rc.d/init.d/nfs start
