How can I find out what process is accessing the disk? Is there a cool monitor out there that I can use to find out?

lsof will list which files are currently open, and which process is using them. (Handy when you are trying to unmount partitions.)

Ah, most useful. Thanks :-)

I've tracked down the issue now.

I used "find / -cmin -1" to find files that were being written to, and /var/log/ksymoops/20021211.log was being written to non-stop. Here is what was in the log (repeated endlessly) ...

20021211 011224 start /sbin/modprobe -s -k -- sound-slot-0 safemode=1
20021211 011224 probe ended
20021211 011224 start /sbin/modprobe -s -k -- sound-service-0-0 safemode=1
20021211 011224 probe ended
20021211 011224 start /sbin/modprobe -s -k -- sound-slot-0 safemode=1
20021211 011224 probe ended
20021211 011224 start /sbin/modprobe -s -k -- sound-service-0-0 safemode=1
20021211 011224 probe ended

Obviously related to sound, and the last sound thing I was doing was getting ALSA going (without success). I looked around at what was running, and there was XMMS (not working, but up). I closed XMMS and: Lo! no more tapping on the disk!

Thanks for all the help.

Now to try and work out whey ALSA is not working for me ...
