[SLUG] ask emacs(get the previous command )

Dear list :

    I enter shell in emacs by

M-x shell .

    but I found that I cant get the previous command by press     ^      (up-arrow)  , or like doskey in DOS

Is there experienced emacs-user can share their experience ?
