6 lines sounds a lot?
maybe you're supposed to "manually" start pppd?
maybe not as your log says pppd is "starting link"
since it's a "straight foward" login without pap/chap,
how about just connecting with minicom then running
pppd by hand? does that work?
can't say I've ever used pppconfig, I used wvdial for a
bit then just edited the pon/poff stuff manually and
used that (now I use ISDN).
I suspect you've got one of those problems that takes
forever or is nigh on impossible to diagnose/solve by
email/phone but wouldn't take too long in person.
Is there a [install|config|whatever]fest coming anytime soon?
maybe someone local can assist you? (I'm in Adelaide)
