My advice would be to drop the webcams altogether, since they're
fairly crappy/low-quality devices.
Instead, get some cheap BT848 capture cards (one for each camera you
want to run), and buy security cameras (they retail for about $100-300
depending on capabilities without powersupply).
You can then drive these under Linux using Video4Linux like any other
webcam using the webcam or camE software to capture stills on a
predefined interval, but hopefully you'll get a much better image than
the webcams can provide.
