Nor did I point out the obvious *nix language LISP!
Which leads to emacs. 

I thought that was just a tad too inflammatory.

As I said, it is horses for courses. I want to work in GIS. I have two
choices <shudder> Visual Basic on NT </shudder> or emacs on Linux. Emacs
is looking might attractive.
