did traceroute not work because you typed traceroute at the shell and nothing happened, if so try /usr/sbin/traceroute to /sbin/traceroute traceroute to a well know domain name eg: www.ibm.com.au
or if you wnat an even easier way just go to http://www.tracert.com select traceroute from the menu on the left. it will enter you ip address for you, select a tracert from telstra and you get a trace from telstra to you, eith the last or second last entry will have your optus node info.

I just realised though, that I need to know the domain name (like
carlnfd1.nsw.optushome.com.au), and since traceroute didn't work, how
do I found the domain name?
Ah, I found that the Windows version is called tracert - so I can boot
up windows and maybe it will tell me.
