If you are planning to stick with stable ( unstable is *pretty*
rock solid right now but YMMV), then you'll have to use
the Gnome 1.4 .debs from Ximian. The problem is that some
of the packages related to the sawfish window manager may
break if you later replace them with ones from Debian.
Specifically sawfish-gnome, librep9, rep-gtk and rep-gtk-gnome
must be either all from Debian, or all from Ximian/Helix.
The one from Ximian should have either ximian or helix in their
version number.
i.e rep-gtk_helix-0.15_i386.deb or something like that.

GNOME 1.4 is part of Debian's testing (Woody) and unstable (Sid)
distributions. If you wish to use Debian's own GNOME packages, you
will need to dist-upgrade to testing or unstable first.
