It works for me.  I seem to remember that when configuring CUPS there is an
option for CUPS to create a printcap file.  I expect CUPS doesn't need it
but that Samba (and other apps) might still use it.  The printcap file only
contains a list of printer names, 1 per line followed by a colon.
