Alternately, just learn how to use pine

setup->config->editor (it's way down near the end), give it /usr/bin/vi 
(or wherever your vi is)

you can then press ^_ in the composer and it switches to vi

Alternately, you can set the "enable-alternate-editor-implicitly" flag, 
and it will use vi automatically
