Sounds like you've mashed your modules directory. A lot of the kernel
compiling howto's forget to mention you need to move your existing
/lib/modules/<kernel-version> out of the way when recompiling the same
version with different options. Since you can't go back to the old one you
might as well move the above directory out of the way and try make
modules-install again.
Either way have a look in /lib/modules/<kernel version>/drivers/net or
similar for your network card's module then try "insmod driver.o" from in
the directory.
