I believe the cheapest registrar with an excellent service
is Godaddy if you can live without the .com.au domain (which
serves little real purpose and costs way too much IMHO).

Most expensive rate is US$8.95 per year for domain
registration of .com .net and .org and reduces to as low as
US$6.95 per year for a ten year term. Compare that with the
ridiclous prices for .com.au! They have hosting too, but a
quick google search will provide plenty to choose from.
