[SLUG] problem dist-upgrade potato -> woody

More on that prob I have....

loubens:/etc/init.d# dpkg --audit
The following packages are in a mess due to serious problems during
installation. They must be reinstalled for them (and any packages
that depend on them) to function properly:
 libreadline4 GNU readline and history libraries, run-time
libraries.

The following packages have been unpacked but not yet configured.
They must be configured using dpkg --configure or the configure
menu option in dselect for them to work:
 locales GNU C Library: National Language (locale) data [support]

Ok well I have the debs still:
/var/cache/apt/archives/libreadline4_4.2-5_i386.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/locales_2.1.3-18_i386.deb
/var/cache/apt/archives/locales_2.2.3-9_all.deb

loubens:/etc/init.d# man apt-get
man: error while loading shared libraries: libdb.so.3: cannot open
shared object file: No such file or directory

Um I do have some probs eh !

loubens:/etc/init.d# ls -l /lib/libdb*
/lib/libdb.so.2 -> libdb1-2.2.3.so
/lib/libdb.so.3 -> libdb.so.3.old
/lib/libdb1-2.2.3.so
/lib/libdb1.so.2 -> libdb1-2.2.3.so

The libdb.so.3 is a BROKEN symlink to libdb.so.3.old

I presume that the dist-upgrade was able to rename the libdb.so.3 to
libbdb.so.3.old but didnt replace it. Is that what the prob might be.?

My questions are:
1. what went wrong.
2. Do I force an installation from the debs?
3. do I use dpkg with force or apt-get install with force?
4. I presume I change into the dir with the debs and tell either dpkg or
apt-get to use that package explicitly. what syntax do I use.
5. what else can I try.

I notice that apt-get says using force is a last resort and I can
really bugger up the system :-)

apt-get consultant :-)
