[SLUG] Dial Up Connection

I am very new to Linux just getting to know my way around vaguely.

I have a Red Hat 7.1 installation and am using the RHPOP  applet. My
internal modem is not recognised (another issue for later) but my Hayes
external 56.6 modem is recognised. I am finding that it takes alot of
dial ups to get on and I eventually sometimes get  Bug Notification
request.  Sometimes the connection speed is glacial. Most downloads are
very slow. Are there some settings I can get from my ISP (IHUG) that I
need to configure and where do I make those settings?

I have a dual boot and the connection in MS/DOS world is not problematic
so it is not the line or the ISP.

To avoid becoming too reliant on asking the LIST what is the best first
thing to read to begin the Linux path to less darkerdom..
