RE: Re: [SLUG] Another report from the trenches

Ah yes, that's why I am rather keen to hang onto old things like
Sparcstations.
They might only have 8 bit colour, but they make a fantastic X terminal.
We had a visitor in over the weekend; while Mike was doing the editing /
updating and typesetting on LaTeX, the visitor was able to view the output
satisfactorily using xdvi on the old sparcstation 4. The xdvi program was
actually running on the Alpha but with the display running on the sparc
through a telnet session.
We actually bought the old sparc for its colour monitor; the fact that it
came with a fully functional computer was a bonus.
And Jamie, it's so quiet, it makes a 486 sound like a threshing machine in
comparison.
Mind you, when they were new the sparcs probably cost $50k; we paid about
0.004 of that amount.

Regards,

Jill.
