perl is older than python, I learnt it first, I like its
power, it enables a very good O-O/modular programming idiom
or paradigm, it is *much* faster in the dev and rinse cycle
than C/C++, it is v.high quality, its embeds nicely into
Apache, CPAN gives you heaps of ready-to-rock objects,
there is a considerable skill base available populated with
talented perl programmers. (to enumerate a few points)
I am a language nut and have tried many of 'em. Perl is all
those things above and it's *fun*.
Python has its good points (Zope uses it as well), and it does
support a rigourous O-O paradigm.
In the end, it is probably alot about "favourite colour" and
"getting the job done easily" - remember, programmers are lazy
beasts ;^)
I guess an interesting counter question (from which you would
learn even more) is this: Why is Visual Basic such an awful
language and why do language gurus laugh when you say you've
written such and such in it? I know this is *not* applicable to
SLUG, since the VB virus has not infected Linux - nor is it ever likely
too - we hope and pray! ... but it is an interesting computer
language phenomenon or abberation.
