[SLUG] X screen suspended in console

i have a funny problem with X. when i drop to console, my X screen is
suspended in console.

i can't see anything that i type in console because the X screen is
suspended on the current screen. i know that i'm typing commands, and the
system is accepting commands because i can start up another X session as
another user from console, except that i can't see what it is that i'm
typing.
