AWT got buried underneath. It is Swing now and the interface is better,
approaching, GTK and the Windows look and feel. Reasonable portability from
Linux, Unix to Windows. Certain quirks remain.
But, where Java shines now is in server side execution for dynamic web
pages, database and transactional access. I recently had to port a Java
based servlet/JSP/EJB application from NT to AS/400 and did not change 1
character of the code... For good measure and for my own interest, I
deployed the same application on AIX and Linux without any change.
PS: The AS/400e series is fast. The first time we ran it, I was so astounded
that I though it was serving out static pages or I had some sort of caching
turned on or something like that.
Guess what, NT against Linux and who won ? No prizes...
