This was originally for those magneto-optical disks
of yesteryear; but I think cdrw uses it too.
I don't know much more about it except the stuff

Well hopefully most manufacturers can restrict themselves
to the original format.  However this may be too onerous
in that it might restrict you to fat12, with 8.3 file
names.
