Sorry, I should qualify that. The legendre symbol is a function that
takes two inputs, and tells you whether or not a particular number
exists in a given number system (the number system is one of the
inputs). The reason it is of significance is that there are conditions
under which you can invert it (ie, reverse the inputs so that the number
system becomes the other, random parameter), and get the same result.
So, the two number systems are connected in a way that I don't fully
understand (I don't know if it is understood in general).
