Re: [chat] Hard Drive Problems

Howdy,

ATA100/133 is totally back compatible with ATA33/66. All that the 100/133 bit means is that this is the maximum *theoretical* (Hopeful, even, to anyone familiar with the disk drive industry :)) transfer rate of the drive. And it's only going to hit these speeds in burst mode if the controller tells it it's ok. Which an ATA 33 controller isn't. I've plugged many a 66 or 100 drive into a 33 controller with no troubles whatsoever. In fact, I've got a pair of 100 drives working flawlessly (stress tested and all) in a RAID 1 array on an ATA66 controller right this second.

HTH,

Matt

P.S. If you're still really worried about it, you can just pick up a $40 ATA133 controller card with your new drive. Many of these cards have reasonable Linux drivers.

Hi

Iv'e been having problems finding a retail outlet in Sydney that
sells ATA33/66 hard drives. Iv'e tryed ringing and personally
visiting various shops, but know one seems to stock anything
that
isn't ATA133. My board was made by a company called QDI and uses
an 'INTEL TRITON IV 430TX' chipset, it's a 200Mhz intel box.
QDI and Intell offer no joy here. Markets worry me, in that
disks can get knocked about a bit, but it maybe my only choice.
I was hoping that some of the 'SLUG' members may have/know of
some one wishing to sell an out of date disk. Maxtor do sell a
ATA66 disk, that i could flash down to 33 but know one keeps
them :) Any assistence here would be most apprieciated,
(running out of space fast) :)
