configure.in.  Does it make a difference?

Actually, I've just tried it on my linux (debian testing) system (with
autoconf 2.13 it seems[1]) and it didn't work, but it did work on a
configure script generated with autoconf 2.53.  So I guess this is a new
thing.

Pete (yes, I think autotools is evil too, but necessary (at least until we
achieve world domination... muahaha))

[1] hmm.. looks like this is needed for php4-dev - didn't realise it would
end up being the default.
