You can start by having a power circuit in you house wired with the HPM
spike protector stuff. It has a fitting at the keyboard and at the wall
outlett.
You can also buy power boards that provide some protection.
You can also buy a UPS with inbuilt protection
Two problems with all this;
1) How long is a piece of string, i.e just how a big a lightning strike
do you want to protect from.
2) You never know if you protection is used. The technology gives its
life to protect you, but you have no way of knowing that it is died. So
essentially part of you yearly maintenance is to replace all these
devices.
For individuals, the cheapest option is just to disconnect everything in
a storm.
If you must have a network on a dial up/xDSL run during storms, then
reguard your GW boxen as sacrificial and make its network link a fibre
optic cable.
