For the inquisitive, the details are as follows.
Sometime between friday night and saturday morning, there was a
poweroutage at UTS which took down the area where slug.org.au is
housed.
Of course, in true network fashion, it was also nearly impossible to
diagnose the fault accurately, to myself in particular it looked like
the progsoc router was having a heartattack. (>1s latency on
traceroute pings is usually not healthy).
The reality was that slug.org.au, being your typical ATX PC system,
didn't come back up again when power was restored. The cavalry
(Thanks Wim!) was finally called in earlier today who discovered that
the progsoc executive (who have access to the room where slug.org.au
is housed) were uncontactable. Access to the room was gained, upon
whence it was discovered that slug.org.au was switched off, and it was
turned back on.
The highly anxious SLUG admin team found out power was back when the
#slug bots suddenly reappeared on OPN. This resulted in a mad
scrabbling of activity to make sure the system was OK, and that nobody
had been unsubscribed from the SLUG lists by mailman's automatic
bounce handlers. As far as I'm aware at this time (some of the mail
is still catching up) nobody has been unsubscribed since the system
was actually off, and not running without bandwidth as I had initially
suspected.
Of course, the resultant mailflood meant it took about an hour for my
initial annoucement of slug being online again to make it out to the
wider world.
This issue will be brough up at the next committee meeting so we can
prevent any future prolonged downtime.
