I noticed this trend in Europe also. It was not uncommon to meet people
who could speak 3 or more languages. I think the education systems in
European countries promote language learning much more than they do here
though.

www.thesaurus.com gives these (amonsgt others) alternatives for 'free
(adj)'
ungoverned, irrepressible, gratis (yes, it's English), unconstrained,
unrestrained, unprevented, unhindered, unobstructed
it also gives 'spontaneous' and 'unvanquished'.
