I never looked at XLib, I presume that yes it would be rather on a similar level.  Maybe what I should have said is thank god for GTK/Gnome period.  A goose like me can cobble together small programs to my hearts content, PyGnome even if you want, but the WIN API (IMHO) seems to require a greater C/C++ knowledge, plus the memory of an Elephant to be able to read your own code and decipher all the convoluted names/macros etc.  For a part-time beginner coder GTK 'lowers the bar' as it were, to consistent window system programming, allowing more opportunity to learn both the language and the API as you go.
