Thanks heaps for the offer. I prob would not accept a freeby for this as
its not for me personally and the Australian Speleological Federation,
while not rich, can afford to pay something. In fact we are hoping
somehow to make some $ out of the database just to help defray the
monthly ISP costs :-) The database is a database of all caves in
Australia at http://www.caves.org.au (click on Karst Index Database), it
runs on a Linux/Apache server run by Chuck Dale and was written in Perl
by a fellow SLUGer Rick Welykochy.
Thanks, I will keep you in mind Peter if we decide to do a win exe.
Basically the database will extended this year to enable users to update
the cave data and this will be done via web mostly but WE MUST cater for
windose users who want to edit data off-line and later upload via web or
floppy-disk/austpost protocol :-)

Yep its a possibility. So far open source software has been used
exclusively in the development and implementation of the ASF's database.
(That was part of the tender specification). I think that
philosophically that's been great and I am proud of that. I can also run
the database at home and do modifications of Rick's code with just the
tools available to me on a Linux distro.
But I am not a Richard Stallman. If its sensible to get a copy of
win2000 or NT to develop a small Perl-cgi-exe on then I may well take
this route. The alternative is to use another language on the windows
clients or some other approach. At present Im busy thinking about
options, reading PHP, ActiveX, COM etc.
...and I would not have known about PerlApp development using the
ActiveState compiler were it not for slug-chat :-)
