Dear readers,
I am really keen to get a version of Linux up and running. I recently
purchased a "Next Handbooks" learning Linux booklet that includes a cd copy of
RedHat 7.1 etc...
I have just set up a new pc system with the
following specs; P4 1600 cpu with Intell 845 chipset, Asus P4B mo/bo, 640
mb pc133 Sdram (1x512 and 1x128), 1x 20GB WD Caviar 7,200 spin ATA 100 hdd
partitioned as; C: 1.46GB Win ME and as little else as possible, E:
1.46GB (Vacant), F: 4.87GB Data Files, G: 8.10GB Programs, H: 2.69GB
Original Download Program Copies for future re-installs.
1x40GB Maxtor 5,400 spin ATA 100 hdd partitioned
as; D: 516MB Swap File (set at 500MB), I: 501MB Disposable Temp Files, J: 9.75GB
Multimedia (downloads of various program cd's etc), K: 13.1GB Backups of
C:,E:,F: &G: (full and interim), L: 13.3GB (vacant).
Drive M: "LG" Cd burner 40x16x10. Drive N: "Sony"
DVD Rom 40x16. Drive A: LS 120 Superdrive "Mitsubishi" in place of normal floppy
and configured as a bootable device.
I have a boot manager/loader installed and running
called "XOSL" (extra operating systems loader) and would like to know if I can
use that in place of "LiLo" ?
Considering that Windows ME does not have a native
DOS or run Autoexec.bat and will not recognise the "Format A: /S" command to
create a bootable floppy, how do I stand ?
Could some kind soul at slug possibly explain in
detailed, simple to understand language (for this simple newbie :-) ) exactly
how to load/install RedHat 7.1 from the cd and exactly where on my system I
should load it to. Can I run it with Windows ME and boot it with
"XOSL" from a separate partition ? Do I run it and let it create it's own
partition and if so, how will that affect my current partitions ?
Please help me with this as I am very interested in
getting Linux up and running. Kind Regards... Jim.
"XOSL" is free and can be checked out at http://home.wanadoo.nl/geurt/features.html
if you are interested... :-)
