s/wavelan cards/useless pieces of crap which work about a tenth of

At least there's a (binary) Linux driver for the cards (Proxim
RangeLans), which seems to work well, if you define 'well'
according to the above.
The range of the wireless cards are rather shocking too. There
are large signs in the library which say "YOU CAN USE YOUR
WIRELESS CARD HERE!", which point to the space of a row of desks.
On some levels, it'll actually encompass a half-decent area of
desks (like about 15m x 15m), while on others, it'll only work
(literally) on about two or three desks closely chained together.
I probably wouldn't have an issue if it actually worked over 30%
of the time. [rant rant rant]
