If it is Sydney Uni, someone there has a point to point link to an
outside location for quite a while.

I believe Bond Uni is "doing" some campus wireless system. Don't know
any more details.

Yes, more users make it incredibly slower (in my experience). The North
Canberra stuff was point to point links. They used the Wavelan cards and
built their own aerials. That was done relatively cheaply (say <
$200/end).   The D link cards are really designed to do a single floor
office, can not take an external antenna(that I could see) and are
expensive. 

You really need a card that you can add an external antenna to, then you
can play around.
