briefly: neither optus nor telstra were doing cable here when I looked into
it (probably still aren't), I made a small army of equiries about adsl with
telstra and by the time they finally got back to me (several months later),
the expense of getting adsl for the period of the remainder of the lease on
this house was just too great. Aside from which, even if they'd gotten back
to us earlier I would have had to convince our land lord to let us do it
which is difficult because he's mostly pretty invisible.

yep. I wasn't expecting anywhere near 40km.
I'm currently considering ways to con my uni into running a route through
there. Because (aside from being very useful for me), it has the potential
to get a lot more people (at the uni) interested in taking part which would
expand the userbase and maybe make it possible.
I'm just wondering how the network will deal with more users. Will it make
the link slower? I'm guessing this is essentially peer to peer, which I
suppose means clever routing to avoid congestion. Is there anything out
there that does this already?

Well, if what Marcel was saying is right, it'd be about $200, which seems
pretty reasonable to me.
